Values Statement

When a system, like the world today, is designed for and by a singular demographic for a singular benefit, it risks being too narrow; narrow in planetary, cultural and social assumptions, which increases the risk for many and undermines resilience. This legacy is core to many global challenges we face.

By taking a people-centric, systems thinking approach, we bring together a broad collective of professionals in an attempt to rethink, redesign with core technical expertise new approaches to climate and disaster management; designed to overcome that legacy.

Our first duty is to people at risk of disaster, wherever they are in the world.

We collectively contributes practical skills, diverse perspectives and know-how to co-create, which we believe is key to progress. A professional network which looks to create space for partnership and practical collaboration, professional support, and a safe environment to question, unpack and learn from each other.

We are not interested in smashing glass ceilings; we open windows and rig rope systems together and climb, or we hot wire a helicopter! We look to ally so that we can develop innovative solutions built from diversity and strong technical capability.

We can transcend organisational mandates, communicating knowledge from our own area of expertise and experiences that can unearth some of the barriers to meeting global challenges. We couple systems thinking, technical knowledge and the ability to practically reimagine.  We challenge one another fearlessly but with a deep respect for each other's expert and cultural perspectives and disciplines, We do not shy away from proposing change to existing structures and systems to provide equity, respect and opportunity for all.

We do not “other”. All countries, all peoples are unique, and are at different points when it comes to disaster and climate resilience, thereby choosing and taking different approaches to risk management. Wealth, while important, is just one component of that resilience and capabilities.

We provide professional service to all countries unilaterally; the developed developing country distinction being a somewhat tired construct serving little purpose. By understanding and valuing the lessons, capabilities, skills and ideas all people have to share, we leverage all resources at our disposal now to meet challenges today. We will not wait for an optimal future to present itself for something to be possible; we will get our hands dirty and graft to move us towards it.

In our respective industries we pride ourselves on being do-ers.  Our work is serious, and we take our responsibility as such, but we take ourselves lightly.  We are open to learn, have our minds changed and understand things differently. Importantly we value all members for everything that they are.  The group is open to professionals of all genders, cultures, faiths and backgrounds – reinforcing that diversity is the core for success.

Very human issues of gender, race, inequality, ethics, neurodiversity, governance, power and accountability have a place in Dauntless discussions as do operational and highly technical issues such as disaster risk and environmental modelling, analytics, system engineering and technologies, space technology to bio tech, financing, planetary sustainability and decision making under uncertainty. The intersectionality where true solutions are to be found.

We are not afraid to take risks when required. We will fail, but we fail forward, together.

Large problems, high complexity, big solutions do not daunt us; we are Dauntless.
