What we do and why we do it

Where science communicates with disaster operations and decision making

Why is the Dauntless group needed? There is a major gap between those in STEM developing technical analytics solutions, and non-technical decision makers in policy and operations in disaster and the climate crisis. We support bringing those worlds together. To communicate and understand, leverage the arts and build confidence and effective cross-disciplinary and cultural collaboration. Support effective system development that works for the world's most vulnerable.

We need a major upturn in investment and capability in practical and effective science communication. The ability to manage complexity. Intercultural communication and exchange in science communication are fundamental to this and effective risk governance.

If it doesn’t work for the most vulnerable and powerless in society, it doesn’t work yet.

Advances in earth observations, hazard and climate science, modelling, machine learning, and AI present major opportunities but also major risks in disaster, climate management, and governance. Human approaches to decision-making, diversity of data sources, and uncertainty management are critical to truly leveraging these advances for society.

Misunderstanding of scientific data, uncertainty, bias, and fundamental assumptions in scientific evidence are significantly impacting effective and transparent decision-making. Equally, scientific endeavours are often not being leveraged or docked into operational systems well. This resulting in more vulnerable people at risk and missed opportunities to prevent losses and save lives.

WHO WE ARE

  • Clare Harris is an international leader in the interface of science, data and operational disaster management, focusing on decision making under uncertainty. Clare has more than 20 years of experience in operational disaster management and system development globally, working at senior operational levels across humanitarian agencies, government, crisis financing and scientific agencies, Holding degrees in International Disaster Management and Engineering and Geophysical Hazards. Clare specializes in supporting governments' duty bearers, response agencies, and scientists worldwide to engage in interdisciplinary work, bridging science and technology to operations, governance and decision-making required to manage disasters and our changing climate. Clare is the founder of Dauntless group

  • Yohana Tesfamariam Tekeste began her career in biotechnology and risk management associated with agricultural and infectious disease-based risk, researching and producing diagnostic tests for malaria and cholera. That work led her to the Columbia Climate School’s International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), supporting the development of science and data systems responding to climate variability to create early warning systems for the spread of infectious diseases. Supporting technological development interfaces with community participation and cultural communication. This intersecting with index-based insurance and disaster risk financing development. Yohana is Co founder and Associate Director of Dauntless group.
